As we hurtle past 1.5°C and towards 2°C of warming, the need for adaptation grows ever more urgent. Just as carbon literacy is vital in our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adaptation literacy is essential if we are to navigate the escalating impacts of climate change.
Our Adaptation Literacy course is designed for anyone who wants a good general understanding of adaptation and resilience to climate change. It comes in a short version that is tightly focused on adaptation issues, and a long version that includes additional content on climate change science, policy and impacts.
The short version runs as 3 online sessions or as an in-person course over one day. It includes sessions on key concepts in adaptation (understanding adaptation), conditions and governance for effective adaptation (making adaptation work), and key actions relating to adaptation planning, design and implementation (the adaptation process). Short interactive exercises are integrated into each session. The short version is aimed at people who already have a good grasp of climate science and policy and/or who want to jump straight into the adaptation content. It contains some brief introductory material addressing where we are in terms of global warming and climate change impacts. You can download a detailed, up-to-date programme for the short course here (pdf).
The long version runs as 6 online sessions or as an in-person course over 2 days. It includes the same content as the short version plus detailed sessions on climate change science, global policy contexts, and climate change impacts, delivered prior to the more adaptation-focused content. The long version is aimed at those who want a solid grounding in the fundamentals of climate science, impacts and policy, as well as in adaptation concepts and processes. Download a one-page outline of the longer version of course here (pdf).
Both versions of the course aim to demystify adaptation for anyone who doesn’t already work on it. They may also benefit those who already work on adaptation, particularly if they are new to the topic and/or have come to adaptation from another background or discipline.
We run both versions of this course as regular open courses that anyone may attend, and on demand for organisations, either as an off-the-shelf product or tailored to an organisation’s needs (see also build your own training).
A more detailed treatment of adaptation is provided by our longer Adapting to Climate Change course. This course is designed for those who need to integrate adaptation into their professional work and require a deeper understanding of issues such as climate risk assessment, the prioritisation of adaptation actions, and adaptation monitoring, evaluation and learning.
Our work on adaptation literacy is part of our partnership with Climate Museum UK, with whom we are working to develop ways of strengthening adaptation literacy through trainings, workshops and other outreach activities aimed diverse audiences.
